COURSE DETAILS

Learn to drive a HGV or LGV and earn up to £30,000

If you’ve never held a HGV or LGV license then we appreciate that it can seem a bit like a minefield and that’s why we make your learning process as clear as possible.

The journey is simple and it starts with a quick call to Transtech to get your course under way, then let us take care of the rest.

On this page you’ll find all the information you need to understand what happens; before you jump in the driver’s seat and, some of what you can expect once you have passed your HGV or LGV training course.

Once you’ve had a read of our four preparation steps, you’ll need to think about which type of license you require. The license classes below will give you an explanation of each category and which vehicle size you will be qualified to drive, along with a short guide from us.

LICENCE INFORMATION

The DVLA says; This allows you to drive large vehicles, i.e. lorries, that weigh between 3500kg and 7500kg. This also includes trailers up to a maximum weight of 750kg.

We say; This course is ideal for anyone driving large vehicles for the first time and some license holders may already have this entitlement. This course is aimed at light goods vehicles and you can expect a salary of around £20k per year, however, given the changing nature and requirements of fleets nowadays we get all trainees to consider whether the ‘C’ license would be a better choice.

The DVLA says; Allows you to drive HGV vehicles that weigh between 3500kg and 7500kg as well as a trailer over the weight of 750kg. It is worth remembering that the total combined weight cannot be any higher than 12,000kg.

We say; If you are looking to drive for the Ambulance Service or Paramedic then this is ideal. This is exactly as the above category but it allows you to carry an additional trailer and it is a great way of making yourself more employable by adding another skill.

The DVLA says; Allows you to drive large vehicles, i.e. lorries, with a weight of 3500kg and higher, along with trailers with a maximum weight of 750kg.

We say; This is probably the most popular HGV license taken in the UK and you’ll typically be driving an 18 tonne rigid – “Most of our trainees go on to earn £23-28k per year following this course and given that it usually takes around a week, it is a very popular choice” – Paul Bates – Chief Instructor.

The DVLA says; Allows you to drive category C vehicles but with trailers with a weight over 750kg.

We say; This is exactly as the above category but it allows you to carry an additional trailer and it is a great way of making yourself more employable by adding another skill. Essentially, this class of license will let you drive the largest HGV vehicles on the road.

GET PREPARED

1. Book Medical

Before you start your course with Transtech, all drivers are required to pass a simple medical exam.
Did you know that an incorrectly completed medical form can prevent you from driving for up to 12 years? Getting it right first time is vital, which is why we organise the medical exam and assist with any form filling on your behalf, it’s just another example of how we go the extra mile. If you have any specific questions, then please call us.

2. Licence

All you need is a full car license to start training as a lorry driver
Your full car license must be valid when you start your training course and be valid for the duration of your HGV/LGV course. It’s also worth checking your details are up to date. Check out the DVLA website if you need to change your details.

3. Provisional

All drivers need to apply for their provisional entitlement before you can start practical skills training with us
We will gladly help you submit the necessary paperwork to get your entitlement and answer any questions you may have. Please contact us for more information.

4. Theory

As with all licenses, there is a theory test prior to beginning  your training course
We are more than happy to help with booking your theory. We offer our own theory test preparation and whilst this is by no means mandatory, most of our applicants really appreciated having the support of an experienced trainer.
